American Apparel "branding" is amazing to some and awesome to others

And ridiculous to pretty much everyone.

If you haven't been to their site, you should. The homepage features a collection of photo series, most of which showcase employees wearing some of the more popular designs. For instance, there's a slideshow of some busty employee (all models are employees) showing off the Light Aqua Tank Thong...from all angles to be sure. There's also a new series that pushes the boundaries, even for American Apparel, that shows "Irene in Red Leg Warmers" and NOTHING else. And that's just a taste (so to speak).

Their print and poster ads have been another contentious issue, highlighting underwear, socks and leggings by having their models wear nothing else. One of my personal favourites is an ad for a thong shot with the models ass in the air with the camera close enough to capture some hairs that her brazilian waxer missed. I can't find it online, but if i do, i'll post it. Here are some other "racy" ads.

Like it or not, these ads have been successful. They've garnered quite a bit of controversy, which works wonders for the company. They've taken on the immigration policies in the Unitited States in their ads and have even done what they called "social parody" by using an image of Woody Allen (and were quickly sued for $10 million by him). It's a weird company, one that's given us a new look at branding, the role of the corporation in politics and society and the manipulation of what can only be called propoganda to define themselves. I've been really interested in their ads and, mostly, the reaction to them.

Check out the site...www.americanapparel.net and they've also got a youtube channel.
